Pakistan International Airlines Eyes 16 Boeing Aircraft Following Privatization

In a highly significant move for South Asian aviation, Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has officially launched high-level negotiations with Boeing to acquire 16 Boeing 787 Dreamliners, marking the beginning of an ambitious fleet renewal program following the airline’s privatization.

The initiative signals a major transformation for the national carrier, which is aiming to rebuild its international presence after years of financial and operational challenges. Backed by new private ownership, PIA is positioning itself for long-term growth in an increasingly competitive global aviation market.

According to Arab News, PIA’s management raised the issue of delivery timelines during a recent visit to Boeing’s headquarters in Washington alongside Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi. While Boeing had originally planned deliveries to begin in 2028, the manufacturer is now expected to deliver the first five Dreamliners during the first half of 2027, subject to final agreement.

The early induction of the aircraft is expected to significantly strengthen PIA’s long-haul operations, allowing the airline to expand services on key international routes, including Canada and other destinations.

PIA currently operates a fleet of 19 aircraft serving more than 25 international destinations. Under its long-term growth strategy, the airline plans to expand its fleet to 64 aircraft over the next eight years, with the acquisition of 16 Boeing 787 Dreamliners forming the cornerstone of its modernization plan.
