Honeywell gets $25mn contract to maintain SriLankan Airlines’ APUs

Sri Lanka’s cabinet has approved awarding a 25.17 million dollar contract to Honeywell International Inc for the repair and maintenance of Auxiliary Power Units (APUs) for state-run SriLankan Airlines, minister Vijitha Herath said.

The national carrier lacks the in-house capacity to overhaul these specific units, Herath told reporters.

The contract, which spans five years, was awarded following an international limited competitive bidding (ILCB) process.

The government received six bids for the project.

Honeywell International Inc was selected as the lowest responsive bidder after evaluation by the procurement committee.

APUs are critical components in commercial aircraft, providing electrical power and pneumatic pressure to start the main engines and run air conditioning and electrical systems while the plane is on the ground.

They also serve as a backup power source in the event of an engine failure during flight.

SriLankan Airlines has been struggling with engine-related maintenance issues and a shortage of functional aircraft over the past year, leading to several flight delays and cancellations.

The move to secure a long-term maintenance contract is seen as an effort to stabilize the technical reliability of the aging fleet. (Economy Next)
