Sri Lanka is exploring the possibility of introducing passenger drone services, with Chinese autonomous aerial vehicle company EHang presenting its eVTOL technology to government officials.
At a meeting with Minister of Ports and Civil Aviation Anura Karunathilaka, EHang representatives outlined potential applications in tourism, emergency response, disaster management and maritime operations.
The proposed two-passenger autonomous aircraft could potentially connect Bandaranaike International Airport with hotels in Colombo, with EHang indicating a possible fare of around US$20–30 per trip.
Officials noted that any commercial operation would require approvals covering aviation safety, regulations, air traffic management, cybersecurity, emergency procedures and landing infrastructure, with several government agencies expected to be involved.
Potential tourism routes around Sigiriya, Pidurangala, Colombo and Port City were also discussed, including the possibility of establishing a demonstration zone in Port City.
The proposal remains at the discussion and planning stage, and no commercial passenger drone operations have yet been approved in Sri Lanka.
