Inspector General of Police (IGP) Priyantha Weerasuriya has instructed all police stations to monitor drone operations and related businesses to prevent the gathering of sensitive national security information and potential terrorist threats.
Sri Lanka Police observed that taking proactive measures is a timely necessity to prevent Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) from being used for activities that jeopardise national security.
According to the Police Media Division, the import, sale, and operation of drones must strictly adhere to the provisions of the Civil Aviation Act No. 14 of 2010. However, information has surfaced regarding certain institutions importing drones
and spare parts in a manner that poses a risk to the country’s safety.
The IGP directed all police stations to investigate whether entities importing, selling, or repairing drones and spare parts are operating within the legal framework of the Civil Aviation Act.
Furthermore, police stations will maintain detailed records and databases of these businesses to ensure continuous oversight and regulatory compliance.
The Police Media Division emphasised that these steps are vital to mitigate any possibility of drones being utilised for unauthorised intelligence gathering or launching attacks. (Daily News)
