Five injured as Eurowings A320 encounters Emirates A380 wake turbulence

Five people were injured after a Eurowings Airbus A320-200 encountered wake turbulence generated by an Emirates Airbus A380-800 near Sarajevo on 30 May 2026.

The incident occurred during Eurowings flight EW635 operating from Rhodes, Greece to Cologne, Germany. The aircraft involved was an Airbus A320-200 registered D-AEWS.

According to reports, the Emirates Airbus A380-800, registered A6-EUF, was operating flight EK1 from Dubai to London Heathrow at flight level FL380, while the Eurowings A320 was flying at FL360 approximately 7.6 nautical miles behind the superjumbo aircraft.

During the flight over Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Eurowings crew received clearance to climb to FL380, the same altitude occupied by the Emirates A380. As the A320 passed approximately 37,600 feet, it reportedly encountered severe wake turbulence, causing the aircraft to suddenly descend at a rate of around 3,000 feet per minute.

The turbulence resulted in injuries to four passengers and one cabin crew member onboard. Despite the incident, the aircraft continued safely and landed without further issues.
