A New Chapter in Sri Lanka’s Aviation: Ratmalana Airport Opens for MRO Facility – First Aircraft from Canada

Demonstrating the Government of Sri Lanka’s commitment to strengthening the nation’s aviation infrastructure and services, Ratmalana International Airport has officially opened its doors for international MRO (Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul) operations, marking a significant milestone in the country’s aviation sector and revitalizing one of its oldest airports.

After years of limited international activity, the airport has turned a new page in its history with the arrival of a Canadian-registered Cessna 208B aircraft from Indonesia for a comprehensive maintenance programme.

The aircraft, primarily used for aerial surveillance operations, was brought to Sri Lanka by Ceylon Aeronautical Services (CAS), which will also handle all maintenance and repair activities at the Ratmalana Airport yard.

Industry experts emphasize that this achievement reflects the government’s strategic focus on advancing both the tourism and aviation industries, two vital sectors that play a pivotal role in boosting foreign exchange revenue. By enabling international maintenance capabilities at Ratmalana, Sri Lanka is positioning itself as a rising regional hub for aviation services and technical excellence.

This landmark development not only showcases the growing confidence in local engineering expertise but also sets the stage for the future expansion of MRO facilities across the island, supporting sustainable growth within the nation’s aviation ecosystem.
