British Airways is reportedly assessing the possibility of resuming flight operations to Sri Lanka, according to industry sources. While no official confirmation has been issued, discussions are understood to include an option of operating the service via the Maldives, tapping into combined regional traffic demand.
The airline previously reinstated services to Colombo in April 2013, operating three weekly flights from London Gatwick via Malé using Boeing B777 aircraft, marking its return after a 15-year hiatus following the end of Sri Lanka’s civil conflict.
A potential revival of British Airways services is expected to provide a significant boost to Sri Lanka’s tourism sector, particularly from the UK, one of the country’s key source markets, supporting hotels, tour operators and related local businesses. Enhanced connectivity would also benefit travelers through premium long-haul options, seamless global connections and alliance benefits under the oneworld network.
During its previous return to Colombo in 2013, Hayleys Group, through Hayleys Aviation, served as the General Sales Agent (GSA) for British Airways in Sri Lanka, managing the airline’s commercial and sales operations in the local market. Sources indicate that the same arrangement is expected to continue this time as well.
