The Air Traffic Management (ATM) system at Colombo International Airport, Ratmalana, has been successfully restored following a brief disruption caused by a scheduled system upgrade.
During the upgrade, which is crucial for maintaining the safety and efficiency of Sri Lanka’s airspace, air traffic control for the Colombo Flight Information Region (FIR) was seamlessly managed by the ATM system at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA). This transition was part of the established contingency procedures to ensure uninterrupted air traffic services.
In addition to the alternative ATM system at BIA, other essential infrastructure, including the voice communication system and High Frequency (HF) transmission line for procedural control, remained fully operational. These measures ensured that air traffic operations continued smoothly throughout the upgrade period.
Because of the quick response and hard work of the Air Traffic Safety Electronics Personnel (ATSEP) team at Airport & Aviation Services (Sri Lanka) Limited (AASL), the system was fully restored on the same night.
The swift and effective management of this temporary disruption underscores the resilience and preparedness of Sri Lanka’s air traffic control systems, ensuring the safety and efficiency of air travel in the region.
