Opposition MP Harsha de Silva has criticized the Government’s management of SriLankan Airlines, alleging that the loss-making national carrier is seeking an additional Rs. 100 billion in State funding.
Speaking on the ‘Rathu Ira’ programme on Swarnavahini, MP Harsha claimed that SriLankan Airlines had requested the funds from the Government in several installments of Rs. 20 billion, despite continuing to operate at a loss.
He also raised concerns about the airline’s leadership, stating that SriLankan Airlines has been without a Chief Executive Officer for approximately one and a half years and is currently operating without a chairman.
De Silva further alleged that concerns had been raised regarding potential conflicts of interest involving a former chairman appointed by the Government.
The opposition MP said the public deserves answers on how SriLankan Airlines is being managed, arguing that issues related to funding, governance and leadership require greater transparency and accountability.
