The Women in Aviation International (WAI) Sri Lanka Chapter was officially launched this week under the inspiring theme “RISE. EMPOWER. INSPIRE.” – a call to action symbolizing strength, unity, and progress for women in the aviation and aerospace industries. Women in Aviation International (WAI) is a powerful network of over 20,000 members across 180 chapters in more than 120 countries, representing every sector of aviation. WAI has become a global movement that not only supports women in aviation but also advocates for inclusivity, mentorship, and education.
This landmark event marks a major step forward in promoting gender diversity, leadership, and inclusion within Sri Lanka’s aviation community.
The launch brought together senior leaders and distinguished guests, including Mr. Sunil Jayarathne, Chairman of the Civil Aviation Authority of Sri Lanka; Capt. Duminda Rambukwella, Director General of Civil Aviation; and Air Chief Marshal (Retd.) Harsha Abeywickrema, Chairman of Airport & Aviation Services (Sri Lanka) Ltd.
The occasion was further honored by the presence of Her Excellency Julie Chung, Ambassador of the United States to Sri Lanka, who expressed her strong support for empowering women in aviation and fostering equal opportunities in the sector.
RISE: Creating Opportunities and Breaking Barriers
The newly established Sri Lanka Chapter is guided by a passionate founding board dedicated to fostering mentorship, education, professional development, and global exposure for women in aviation.
Its mission is to inspire young women to rise above barriers, pursue successful careers in aviation, and strengthen their skills and leadership capabilities across all areas of the industry.
The initiative was introduced and mentored by Mr. Rayhan Wanniappa, Deputy Director General of Civil Aviation, whose guidance and support were instrumental in the chapter’s formation. The WAI Sri Lanka Chapter proudly appointed Nishara Sayer Preena as its first President, marking a historic moment for women’s leadership in the Sri Lankan aviation sector.
