UAE honours flydubai Captain Smit Machchhar for courage during in-flight emergency

The United Arab Emirates has honoured flydubai Captain Smit Machchhar and the crew of Flight FZ1073 for their courage and decisive actions in protecting passengers during a serious in-flight emergency.
UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan conferred the First-Class Order of Zayed II on the captain and crew in recognition of their bravery. The awards were presented by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, on 27 October 2026.
The incident occurred on 30 September, when Flight FZ1073, operating from Dubai to Tel Aviv, was diverted to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, following a serious incident in the flight deck. Captain Machchhar sustained injuries, while crew members, off-duty pilots and passengers worked together to help bring the situation under control.
The aircraft landed safely, with all 172 passengers and crew reported safe.
The UAE’s General Civil Aviation Authority had previously commended the captain, crew and passengers for their prompt response during the emergency.
The honour recognises the courage, professionalism and teamwork demonstrated in a critical situation, highlighting the aviation industry’s commitment to passenger safety and the dedication of those who protect lives in the skies.
