Three Gulf Carriers to Position 12 Widebody Aircraft at Mattala, Including 3 A380s

In a late development, amid ongoing tensions in the Middle East, three major Gulf carriers have reportedly agreed to position a total of 12 widebody aircraft at Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport (MRIA) in the coming days.

According to sources, the fleet allocation will include 03 Airbus A380s, the world’s largest passenger aircraft, 04 Boeing B787 Dreamliners and 05 Airbus A350s, all scheduled to arrive by Monday as part of a temporary parking and operational strategy.

Industry insiders highlight Mattala’s vast apron capacity and minimal congestion as key factors behind the decision, making it an attractive location for short-term aircraft positioning.

However, due to the sheer size of the incoming fleet, airport authorities are said to be exploring “creative parking solutions,” with reports suggesting that 03 A380s may be positioned along the edge of the runway to accommodate space constraints.

Further operational details are expected soon… as ground teams prepare to manage what could be Mattala’s busiest moment to date.
