In a remarkable display of aviation prowess, Thailand’s King Maha Vajiralongkorn and Queen Suthida personally piloted their Boeing 737-800 into Bhutan’s Paro International Airport on 25th April 2025. This marked the commencement of their four-day state visit to Bhutan, their first official overseas trip since King Vajiralongkorn’s ascension to the throne in 2019.
Paro Airport is renowned for its challenging approach, nestled between 18,000-foot Himalayan peaks and situated at an elevation of 7,382 feet. As of 2024, only 50 pilots worldwide hold certification to land at this demanding airstrip. The King, a seasoned aviator with a military background, underwent extensive preparation, including simulator training and practice landings at a military airport in Lop Buri, Thailand. Queen Suthida, formerly a flight attendant and trained pilot, served as co-pilot during the flight.
Upon arrival, the royal couple was warmly received by Bhutan’s King and Queen, underscoring the strong diplomatic ties between the two nations.
