Sri Lanka’s airspace recorded its highest overflight traffic of the year, accommodating over 170 aircraft in a single day (17th November 2024). This milestone, excluding Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) departures and arrivals, also marked the year’s highest overflight revenue.
The surge in traffic resulted from the temporary closure of Indian airspace for a missile test, which redirected significant aviation activity through Sri Lankan airspace.
Nalin Silva, President of the Air Traffic Controllers’ Association of Sri Lanka, commended the nation’s air traffic controllers for their exceptional professionalism and efficiency in managing this unprecedented scenario. Their efforts ensured safe and seamless operations during a critical period for regional air navigation.
