Sri Lanka to Invest Rs. 15 Billion in BIA Terminal 1 Modernization: Deputy Minister

Sri Lanka is set to embark on a major upgrade of its aviation infrastructure, with plans to modernize the first passenger terminal at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) through an investment of approximately Rs. 15 billion over the next two years.

Speaking at the passing out parade of 100 newly recruited Aviation Security (AVSEC) officers on July 1, Deputy Minister of Ports and Civil Aviation Janitha Ruwan Kodituwakku said the government has launched several key initiatives aimed at transforming the country’s aviation sector.

He noted that the Terminal 1 modernization project will improve passenger facilities, while construction of the long-delayed Terminal 2 is expected to recommence before the end of this year. According to the Deputy Minister, these developments will significantly enhance BIA’s capacity and reinforce Sri Lanka’s ambition to become a leading regional aviation hub.

The planned projects are part of the government’s broader strategy to strengthen aviation infrastructure, support tourism growth, and drive long-term economic development.
