Sri Lanka has been crowned the World’s Best Island Destination for 2026 by global travel platform Big 7 Travel, securing the top spot in its annual list of “The 50 Best Islands in the World.”
The ranking, now in its seventh edition, evaluates island destinations based on a combination of previous media coverage, social media popularity, emerging travel trends and the editorial team’s expert assessments.
Sri Lanka was recognised for its stunning 833-mile coastline, scenic central highlands, world-famous tea plantations, rich cultural heritage and exceptional biodiversity. The platform also highlighted iconic attractions including Yala National Park and the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Sigiriya as key reasons for the island’s top ranking.
Mo’orea ranked second, followed by Socotra, Madeira and the Galápagos Islands, completing the top five.
According to Big 7 Travel, Sri Lanka offers an unmatched combination of breathtaking landscapes, wildlife, history and cultural diversity, making it one of the world’s most rewarding travel destinations. The platform also recalled the famous words of explorer Marco Polo, who described Sri Lanka as “the finest island of its size in all the world.”
