Bandaranaike Int’l Airport (BIA) Records 14% Passenger Growth in First Eight Months of 2025

Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) has recorded a remarkable 14% growth in passenger handling during the first eight months of 2025, underscoring the continued recovery and expansion of Sri Lanka’s aviation and tourism sectors.

According to data from AASL, BIA handled 6,630,728 passengers between January and August 2025, compared to 5,837,351 passengers during the same period in 2024, marking a 13.59% year-on-year increase.

The month of August 2025 saw the highest traffic, with 922,993 passengers passing through the airport, a clear indication of strong regional travel demand and growing international connectivity.

With the winter tourist season now underway, airlines and airport operators anticipate further growth in arrivals supported by increased flight frequencies and new route launches.

Industry officials note that this surge reflects both Sri Lanka’s rising appeal as a destination and the airport’s ongoing efforts to enhance operational capacity and passenger experience.
