Sri Lanka’s Cabinet of Ministers has approved the procurement and installation of 12 automated passenger clearance gates at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) to streamline immigration procedures and improve passenger processing.
The project includes four gates previously approved in May 2025, along with eight additional gates approved under the latest Cabinet decision.
The automated clearance facility, currently available only to Sri Lankan nationals, is also planned to be extended to foreign nationals arriving in and departing from Sri Lanka, alongside the planned introduction of the e-passport system in 2027.
The expansion comes in response to the continued growth in passenger traffic and the increasing demands on BIA’s clearance facilities.
