Pope Leo XIV shared a rare aviation moment during his journey from Madrid to Barcelona, visiting the cockpit of an Iberia Airbus A320 while en route across Spain.
During the flight, the Pope accepted an invitation from the operating crew to step into the cockpit, where he greeted the pilots and observed Spanish Air Force fighter jets escorting the aircraft. He also reportedly used the aircraft radio to send a personal blessing to the military pilots accompanying the flight.
Iberia marked the special journey with papal-themed details, including the Vatican coat of arms displayed near the aircraft door.
The flight formed part of the Pope’s week-long visit to Spain. Following his arrival in Barcelona, Pope Leo XIV is scheduled to bless the newly completed Tower of Jesus Christ at the iconic Sagrada Família basilica, which will become the tallest church building in the world.
