57-Year-Old Aero Lanka Boeing 727 Detained for Failing to Settle Airport Charges

A Boeing 727-223(F) aircraft linked to Aero Lanka Tours has reportedly been detained by the Civil Aviation Authority of Sri Lanka (CAASL) over unpaid dues exceeding Rs. 280 million owed to Airport and Aviation Services (Sri Lanka) Ltd.

The aircraft, registered TU-TAB (built in 1969), has remained parked at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA), Katunayake for several years after being used for cargo operations under the name ‘Lankan Cargo’.

Authorities had earlier raised concerns regarding the aircraft’s condition and operational status. During severe weather conditions last November, strong winds reportedly lifted the aircraft off its nose gear for a brief moment while it remained parked.

Under Section 101 of the Civil Aviation Act No. 14 of 2010, the CAASL has the authority to detain and if necessary, sell aircraft to recover outstanding payments. Sources said the aircraft is currently in poor condition due to its age and prolonged inactivity.

A final notice has reportedly been issued to the relevant company requesting settlement of the outstanding amount.
