Flight Operations Drop by 60%, but Year-End Goals Remain Achievable: Civil Aviation Ministry

Sri Lanka’s Civil Aviation Ministry remains confident of achieving its year-end targets despite a sharp decline in flight operations caused by the ongoing Middle East conflict. Deputy Minister Janitha Ruwan Kodithuwakku stated that flight movements initially dropped by around 60% and still remain about 30% lower than usual, leading to a noticeable decline in airport revenue.

Speaking to The Morning Daily, he noted that while the exact financial impact is yet to be calculated, reduced flight activity has directly affected aviation income. However, he expressed optimism that the situation will stabilise if the conflict subsides within April, allowing the sector to recover and stay on track with its planned targets.

The disruption has also significantly impacted Sri Lanka’s tourism industry, with flight cancellations, rerouting, and increased operational costs affecting travel demand. Authorities plan to prioritise tourism promotion and aviation sector recovery once regional stability returns.
