SriLankan Airlines Faces Leadership Vacuum Ahead of CEO Interviews Tomorrow (28)

SriLankan Airlines is set to conduct interviews for the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) position on Saturday, March 28, marking a crucial step in the airline’s ongoing leadership transition.

The national carrier is currently facing several management-related challenges, alongside continued financial pressures, making the appointment of a new CEO a critical priority.

According to unofficial sources, there is also uncertainty surrounding the position of the Chairman, with indications that the current Chairman may step down after 30 March 2026. If confirmed, this would result in SriLankan Airlines operating without both a CEO and a Chairman, an unprecedented situation in the airline’s history.

Industry observers note that such a leadership vacuum could pose significant challenges, particularly for an airline already navigating financial and operational difficulties.

Regarding the CEO appointment, sources suggest that the current NPP-led government is inclined toward selecting a local candidate rather than a foreign national. This policy direction reportedly influenced the earlier departure of former CEO Richard Nuttall on May 2025, who currently serves as President of Philippine Airlines.

This will be the second round of CEO interviews. Unofficial sources indicate that during the previous round, the interview panel had selected an Egyptian Captain. However, the process was later halted at a higher level due to policy concerns regarding the appointment of a foreign national.
