SriLankan Airlines Ground Handling Emerges Among World’s Leading Service Providers

SriLankan Airlines Ground Handling has emerged as one of the world’s leading airport ground service providers, achieving international recognition for its adherence to global safety, efficiency and service standards.

According to Deepal Pallegangoda, Head of Airport and Ground Operations, this achievement stems from consistently delivering airport operations in line with internationally accepted benchmarks, as he stated during a recent programme aired on Independent Television Network (ITN).

SriLankan Airlines’ Ground Operations division currently fulfills the operational and service requirements of all airlines operating in Sri Lanka, positioning itself as a critical backbone of the country’s aviation sector.

As the primary ground handling service provider at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA), SriLankan Airport and Ground Services supports 32 airlines, catering to both full-service and low-cost carriers, as well as special and non-scheduled aircraft, while consistently maintaining high on-time performance standards.

Operational performance data further underscores the scale and complexity of SriLankan Airlines’ ground handling operations. On average, the team handles approximately 5,200 aircraft movements per month, serves around 840,000 passengers, and manages about 500,000 baggage items monthly.

In 2025, total operations reached 61,770 flights, with 9.9 million passengers handled and approximately 5.9 million pieces of baggage processed, reflecting the organisation’s strong capacity to support high traffic volumes efficiently while maintaining internationally recognised safety and service standards.
