The government has approved the installation of four automatic passenger clearance gates at the departure terminal of Bandaranaike International Airport, as part of efforts to upgrade airport operations to international standards.
The project is implemented under a cooperation agreement between the International Organization for Migration and the Government of Japan, with Japanese grant assistance of 1,170 million yen launched in 2023. Four similar gates have already been installed at the arrival terminal, with operations expected to begin soon.
Cabinet approval has now been granted to proceed with installing the departure terminal gates in 2026, aiming to improve the efficiency and accuracy of passenger clearance through a unified system.
