Reviving Rome: A strategic chance for SriLankan Airlines to re-enter the Italian market

SriLankan Airlines discontinued its direct flights to Rome, a decision that left a significant gap in its European network. The route, which offered a convenient 10 hour non-stop service between Italy and Sri Lanka, was a favorite among Sri Lankans and South Indians living in Italy.

Many passengers valued the airline for its direct service to Katunayake, avoiding long layovers and complex transit routes. The Rome-Colombo connection was not only practical but also deeply appreciated by the Sri Lankan community in Italy.

Today, SriLankan Airlines continues to serve London, Paris and Frankfurt. However, with the growing tourism industry and over 200,000 Sri Lankans residing in Italy, the absence of a direct Rome flight is increasingly felt. Reintroducing this route could open up significant opportunities, not just to serve the diaspora but also to attract Italian tourists to Sri Lanka.

As SriLankan Airlines charts its path to recovery, re-establishing the Rome connection could be a smart and strategic move, tapping into a high-potential market that is eager for direct access once again.
