Wildlife Department and Airport & Aviation Services Sign MoU to Protect Wildlife Around Mattala Airport

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed to establish a dedicated Wildlife Office at Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport, aiming to mitigate animal-related risks and strengthen airport safety within its surrounding biodiversity-rich environment.

The agreement was signed between Airports and Aviation Services (Sri Lanka) Limited and the Department of Wildlife Conservation under the patronage of Minister Anura Karunathilaka. Several key officials, including ministry representatives and aviation authorities, were present at the event.

The initiative has also received full support from the Ministry of Environment, reinforcing its importance in aligning airport operations with environmental sustainability and international aviation standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization.

Speaking at the event, the Minister highlighted that managing wildlife hazards is crucial not only for operational safety but also for maintaining global aviation compliance.

Meanwhile, the government has opened opportunities for both local and foreign investors to participate in the development and operations of Mattala Airport. A Cabinet-appointed committee is currently overseeing a transparent selection process to attract a suitable investment partner, with the goal of boosting aviation and tourism in Sri Lanka.
