Transdigm Group invests $ 8.5 Mn to launch aviation safety manufacturing hub in Sri Lanka

AmSafe Bridport is a subsidiary of Transdigm Company (a $6.6B company that employs over 16,000 people globally and listed on New York Stock Exchange ). Established in 2001 as an engineering solution provider to global airlines and aircraft builders such as Boeing and Airbus, AmSafe BirdPort began its miniaturization operations in Sri Lanka to cater to the safety and security requirements of the global aerospace and defense markets. Further, it diversified its portfolio to include designing and manufacturing engineered textile solutions. The company has achieved notable growth during 2012 to 2023—4-fold growth in business in Sri Lanka.

Due to remarkable Sri Lankan growth and Chinese new tax policies, Transdigm Group has decided to relocate “Shield” manufacturing plants from China to Sri Lanka.

Senior officials at Transdigm stated that they initiated a study to find a new location for their Chinese manufacturing. We also considered India, Mexico, and Malaysia but decided on Sri Lanka after strong encouragement from AmSafe Bridport and their track record of success. At this time, we are moving forward with relocating 100% of our Chinese manufacturing to Sri Lanka. This move will not only facilitate future business growth in Sri Lanka but also create opportunities for other Transdigm Operating Units to expand their operations in the country. The total investment in Sri Lanka amounts to 8.5 million USD, creating direct employment opportunities for 500 Sri Lankans.

Shield has a legacy of more than 74 years as a solutions provider for every application for human safety. Shield provides restraint systems for various applications such as child seats, utility vehicles, commercial trucks, RVs, motor coaches, school/transit buses, and construction/agriculture equipment. Further, the company leading in advanced manufacturing with automated high and low volume/mix global operations uses the latest tools and processes to produce over 20 million units a year with best-in-class quality at the right value for you.

The product is a symbol of the highest quality. With Best-in-Class Quality, the company processes are based on the ISO9001 and IATF16949 standards. Furthermore, the company goes above and beyond regulatory requirements to validate their products.

The BOI not only brings investment to the country but also provides much-needed skills and upskilling opportunities for Sri Lankan youth, positioning them as excellent candidates for the Industry 4.0 manufacturing environment.
