SriLankan reroutes London flight amid Iran-Israel conflict

Precautionary measures have been taken to reroute SriLankan Airlines’ direct flight to London over Egypt following the breakout of hostilities between Iran and Israel, the company reveals.

Responding to The Sunday Morning Business, SriLankan Airlines Manager Corporate Communications Deepal Perera revealed that the direct flight to London which passed over Iraq was the only SriLankan flight affected by the commencement of hostilities between Iran and Israel.

Due to the proximity of this flight route to the conflict region, immediate steps have been taken to reroute the flight through Egypt as a precautionary measure.

“We had precautionary plans in place to avoid this region in turmoil. Therefore, we are not affected by these recent developments.

“We are avoiding the airspace around Iraq on our flight to London. Our direct flight to London, which previously passed over the region, is now going over Egypt,” he stated.

Commenting further, Perera revealed that SriLankan Airlines had previously adopted the aforementioned amended flight route as a precautionary measure when similar conflicts had broken out in the region.

Accordingly, with the commencement of hostilities between Israel and Iran on Tuesday (1), the airline had taken immediate steps to implement these precautionary measures.

According to Reuters, concerns of a wider conflict in the Middle East have prompted international airlines such as Aegean Airlines, Air Algerie, airBaltic, Air Europa, Air France, and KLM Royal Dutch Airlines to suspend flights to the region or to avoid affected airspace. (The Morning)
