Sri Lanka’s tourism sector has surpassed the 1.6 million tourist arrivals milestone in 2026, with strong air connectivity from India, the Gulf region and Türkiye continuing to play a significant role in bringing international visitors to the island.
SriLankan Airlines remains the largest airline contributor, recording 427,084 tourist arrivals during the first eight months of 2026, followed by IndiGo with 208,970.
Major Gulf carriers also made a substantial contribution, with Qatar Airways recording 115,425 arrivals, Emirates 109,381 and Etihad Airways 86,744. Air India contributed 77,494, while Turkish Airlines brought 57,176 tourists to Sri Lanka. Aviation Voice
Together, these seven airlines accounted for more than 1 million tourist arrivals, highlighting the importance of Sri Lanka’s air connectivity with India, key Gulf aviation hubs and Istanbul.
Turkish Airlines: A European Connectivity Bridge
While Gulf-based carriers featured prominently among the leading contributors, Turkish Airlines stands out as an important non-Gulf carrier, particularly because of its strategic connectivity between Sri Lanka and Europe through its Istanbul hub. The airline provides an important link between Colombo and a wide range of European destinations, strengthening Sri Lanka’s access to the European tourism market.
