Sri Lankan startup Seahorse Air Ceylon has presented a proposal to establish a Vertical Take-Off and Landing (VTOL) aircraft manufacturing facility in Sri Lanka.
Representatives of the company met Director General of Civil Aviation and CEO of the Civil Aviation Authority of Sri Lanka (CAASL), Capt. Daminda Rambukwella, to outline plans to develop aircraft manufacturing capabilities focused on the emerging Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) sector.
According to CAASL, Seahorse Air Ceylon has already been registered with the Board of Investment (BOI) of Sri Lanka and is currently seeking the necessary regulatory approvals to begin the research, development and testing phase of the project.
During the meeting, CAASL officials outlined the regulatory framework, certification process and aviation safety requirements that would have to be met during the project’s initial stages, in line with national and international aviation standards.
Capt. Rambukwella welcomed the initiative while stressing the importance of maintaining aviation safety, security and regulatory oversight as new technologies are introduced.
CAASL said the proposed project has the potential to contribute to the development of Sri Lanka’s aviation industry and the country’s participation in the growing Advanced Air Mobility sector.
VTOL aircraft are designed to take off and land vertically, reducing the need for conventional airport runways. The technology is increasingly being explored internationally for applications including short-distance passenger transport and other air mobility services. (Newswire)
