The new National People’s Power (NPP) Government plans to develop the Palali International Airport which will be a stepping stone to building the economy of the people of the North who have been hit hard by the war.
The Minister said that the Government is paying special attention to the Palali International Airport to develop it and improve it as an international airport due to the increase in demand from local and foreign tourists to use this airport.
Minister Ratnayake met with the staff of all departments of the Palali Airport and inquired about the existing facilities and stated that the Government will provide the necessary advice and support to develop and improve all departments and the infrastructure.
He said that the development of the Palali International Airport with improvements to its infrastructure facilities will help especially tourists from Jaffna who are currently arriving at the Bandaranaike International Airport, Katunayake.
The Minister said that the Government is hoping to make amendments to the aviation laws to suit domestic flights with the improvement of the Palali Airport.
“Many more tasks need to be done to develop the Palali International Airport and the Airport Authority has plans for this.
The Airport and Aviation Services Chairman says that the Palali Airport has the necessary funds for this development work.”
The Minister said that the Palali Airport should be developed as a fully functional international airport very soon. He said that in order to achieve this, the runway of the airport should be extended and the infrastructure of the terminal should be developed.

Fisheries, Aquatic and Ocean Resources Ramalingam Chandrasekar and several Members of Parliament also participated in the event joined by Defence Secretary Air Vice Marshal Sampath Thuyacontha and the Chairman and staff of the Airport and Aviation Services.
