Maldives Takes Off: New Velana Airport Terminal Opens with Maldivian A330 Inaugural Flight

The Maldives marked a historic milestone on 26th July 2025, as the new passenger terminal at Velana International Airport officially opened, coinciding with the nation’s 60th Independence Day.

Inaugurated by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, the state-of-the-art terminal spans 72,000 square meters and can accommodate 7.5 million passengers annually. The inaugural operation featured national airline Maldivian’s A330 wide-body aircraft, which was the first to be served at the new facility.

Celebrations included a drone show, fireworks, and over 6,000 guests. The terminal is seen as a key step in elevating the Maldives’ global tourism appeal, with MMPRC highlighting its role in attracting a broader range of travelers and expanding into new markets. – Foreign Media
