The future development plans of Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) were reviewed during a special meeting chaired by Ports, Civil Aviation and Energy Minister Anura Karunathilaka. Discussions focused on short-, medium- and long-term projects aimed at increasing passenger capacity, enhancing service quality and improving operational efficiency.
Among the key initiatives, the Terminal 1 Expansion Project is expected to add capacity for approximately 500,000 additional passengers annually, while the new Terminal 2 project is scheduled to commence construction in November 2026 and be completed within 30 months. The developments are intended to strengthen BIA’s position as a modern and passenger-friendly international gateway.
