Sri Lanka could soon see brand-new Airbus A220 aircraft operating on its skies, with upcoming OCERA Airlines planning to introduce the type as part of its expansion into international operations.
OCERA Airlines, being developed from Sri Lankan domestic operator DP Aviation, plans to establish Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) as its regional hub and expand connectivity to India, South Asia, Southeast Asia and the Middle East.
The airline is targeting a fleet of up to 10 aircraft by 2030, with the Airbus A220 forming part of its planned fleet expansion. The proposed growth is also expected to create around 400 new employment opportunities across aviation-related fields.
International operations will remain subject to the completion of the ongoing CAASL evaluation and required regulatory approvals.
The Airbus A220 is a next-generation single-aisle aircraft designed for the 100-160-seat market. Available as the A220-100 and A220-300, it features Pratt & Whitney PW1500G engines, advanced aerodynamics and a range of up to around 3,400-3,600 nautical miles. Airbus highlights its fuel efficiency, lower emissions and passenger-friendly cabin, making the A220 well suited for regional and medium-haul routes.
