The Department of Motor Traffic (DMT), in collaboration with the Ministry of Transport and Highways and Airport and Aviation Services (Sri Lanka) Ltd, officially launched a dedicated Foreign Driving Licence Conversion Counter at the Arrival Terminal of Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA), Katunayaka.
The ceremonial opening of the counter was held on 3rd August under the patronage of the Hon. Minister of Transport, with the participation of senior government officials, dignitaries from key ministries, airport authorities, diplomatic representatives, and members of the media.
This strategic initiative marked a major milestone in enhancing public service delivery, especially for foreign residents, tourists, and business visitors arriving in Sri Lanka. The new counter was designed to facilitate the smooth, transparent, and efficient conversion of valid foreign driving licences into Sri Lankan temporary or regular driving licences, in accordance with regulatory provisions.
Key features of the service included:
- Dedicated 24/7 operational shifts
- Biometric and photo capture facility onsite
- Multilingual assistance
- Same-day expedited issuance for eligible applicants
This initiative formed part of a broader public sector transformation strategy led by the Department of Motor Traffic to ensure that government services were accessible, efficient, and aligned with global standards.
